Running Pocket PC programs on Handheld PCs

This is an experimental solution to run PPC programs on HPCs. Please use it with caution and on your own risk.

PPC programs need some additional functionality that is missing on HPCs:

More details can be found here and here (which is also the source of my knowledge...)

Many installation routines of PPC programs will not let you install the program, because they found out that your device is not a PPC. However, they will often extract and leave the .CAB file on your Desktop PC.You can now copy this .CAB file manually to the HPC and run it. Most programs will warn you that your device is not supported, but will then let you continue with the installation.

If the program runs, there might be a problem with the screen resolution. PPCs normally have a 240x320 (width x height) display, whereas HPCs have 640x240. If the program does not adjust to the screen of the HPC you will probably not see the lower 80 pixels of the program. The solve this problem you can use a program like Nyditots Virtual Display (www.nyditot.com) to rotate or enlarge the screen display.

Here is a list of PPC programs that run or don't run on HPCs:

Name Runs on HPC? Needs mfcce patch on ... Needs virtual display? Remarks
Adobe Acrobat Reader 1.0 yes AcroRd32.exe no -
Ephemeris yes - yes does not work 100%
GsPlayer pour midi v1.14 (f) yes no no GreenSoftware, french version
TomTom Route Planner no - - -

If you have tested PPC programs with this method, please tell me, so I can list them on this site.
